Nicholas Aboagye
Candidate for National Chair
Nicholas Aboagye, president of the University of Waterloo Young Liberals, is a proud Liberal from Southwest Ontario who’s been involved with the Liberal Party since 2011, when his mom brought him to his first rally for then-leader Michael Ignatieff. Since then, he’s grown into a dedicated organizer and leader with a deep belief in the power of progressive politics to deliver real change.
At the University of Waterloo, where he is completing a BA in Political Science with a minor in French, Nicholas has helped revive progressive student life. He rebuilt the UW Young Liberals from non-existent to one of the strongest campus clubs in the country, and he also served as President of the French Society, where he advocated for francophone and francophile students while strengthening academic and cultural engagement on campus.
A 2023 alumnus of the 1834 Fellowship, Nicholas co-led a national policy pitch focused on improving Canada’s Sustainable Jobs Plan to better reflect the needs of Black communities.
On the ground, Nicholas understands that politics is about organizing and building power. In 2022, he managed a school board trustee campaign for the youngest person ever elected in Waterloo Region's history. Nicholas has volunteered in every federal election since 2011 and played a key role in helping elect local MPs Tim Louis and Bardish Chagger. Through these campaigns, Nicholas has gained firsthand experience in what it takes to win in rural, suburban, and urban communities — a perspective that matters deeply to him, because he knows our party is strongest when it reflects every part of Canada, not just the big cities.
Nicholas participated in the Summer Leadership Program, where he worked on regional affairs at the Ministers’ Regional Office in Kitchener, then joined the office of the Minister of Rural Economic Development as a communications and parliamentary affairs intern. In 2024, he served in the Prime Minister’s Office as a digital communications intern.
Now, Nicholas is running to lead the Young Liberals of Canada as National Chair, heading the YLC Renaissance team. His vision is rooted in renewal, representation, and rebuilding not just of our youth wing, but of the party’s connection to young people. With the emergence of Prime Minister Mark Carney, Nicholas believes this is a generational opportunity to re-engage youth around issues like housing, affordability, and climate justice — and ensure young Liberals aren’t just mobilized, but empowered to continue delivering Liberal governments.
